A Coffee Shop without Outlets

I love Oakland’s Blue Bottle coffee. More and more of them have been popping up in Los Angeles. I no longer need to go to the one in Downtown’s Arts District to enjoy one as there is a more convenient West Hollywood location now.

Sadly, this open and gorgeous space of clean lines, Danish-inspired furniture and white brick walls lacks our most precious commodity: an open outlet. Not even one for the utilization for the shop owners themselves can be borrowed here.

It nonchalantly says “Don’t bother camping here all day as you sip one cup of $4 coffee.”
Yet, as pretty as the space is, it doesn’t absorb sound very well. Combine chairs without felt-padded feet grating against a concrete floor, whining children of wired parents, and the banging and clanking that go with grinding and making pour over coffee, this place is LOUD.

If you find yourself nearby, don’t come to Blue Bottle for an open outlet.

My Starbucks Is Better Than Your Starbucks

It’s not because they have a blonde roast or a clean bathroom. It’s not because there are plenty of comfy leather couches.

It’s because they have Qi charging rings for iPhones with Lightning adapter or classic 30-pin.

Yet, despite the numerous rings there aren’t that many Powermat Charging Spots to actually receive a charge.

And if you have ever used a Powermat before, you’re better off NOT using your iPhone while charging because it is very easy to “break” the wireless connection.

Alas, it’s better than not having the ability to charge. That’s so 2015 Q1.

Download our iPhone app and say goodbye to #lowbattery and hello #openoutlet.

iOS 9’s New Low Power Mode Feature

One reason to update your iPhone’s operating system to 9.0 is to get some automatic assistance when you are at 20% battery life.

Instead of manually doing all those suggestions, one tap of the Continue button does that for you.

With the Open Outlet app, you could navigate yourself to an open outlet and maybe buy yourself a coffee.

Cheers,

Richard

What Makes a Super Tagger

if you’re not familiar with the term, it’s what we at Open Outlet Project call someone who tags open outlets in their realm. A realm can be as expansive as a neighborhood or more focused like a college campus or every hair salon in the Fairfax District.

Super Taggers live, work and come alive somewhere and that’s also where you’re going to need to keep your phone nicely charged. And if not yourself then your fellow smartphone users who need to keep #lowbattery away.

With the Open Outlet app for iPhones, you can tag all types of open outlets you find in the wild. Should you find yourself with time to kill before you board at Denver International, take a a few seconds to tag an open outlet on a wall to help a fellow passenger. Or, if you’re a live music fan, take some time out to help a fan out.

Yet, if you are more than a casual traveller but find yourself in a a realm that is either rich or poor in available outlets, please share that information using our app.

And, for those of you that really run with this, and share tags on Twitter, then we call you a Super Tagger and we give you stickers too. You can peel and stick a sticker on a standard outlet where it seems appropriate to do so (sorry, but asking for permission is the best way to be sure).

Super Tagging isn’t for everyone but for those altruistic few that want to help us build essential content.

I hope that’s you!

Happy Charging.

Follow the Stars to an Open Outlet

Should you find yourself a tourist in Los Angeles, and are wanting to walk along Hollywood Blvd, you can get charged at Rise N Grind at Wilcox (tagged by yours truly). You can snap pictures of the stars, selfies, and the grit and grime of that part of Hollywood (not what you expected?).

It’s got to be the first non-major coffee shop in this part of Hollywood Blvd., and is a nice, clean place to park your butt and charge your phone and other gear.

Each of the two, large communal tables has two multi-outlets that offer 3x AC outlets and 2x USB outlets.

There’s free WiFi for 2 hours with a voucher you get from the order counter. There is a restroom, for customers only.

Happy Charging!

Goodbye #lowbattery. Hello #OpenOutlet.

A Coffee Shop with Plenty of Open Outlets

if you find yourself in Downtown Los Angeles, check out The Classic coffee place on Main Street (tagged by yours truly).

The airy space offers lots of varied seating from a communal table to counter space to two person coffee tables.

At most of these smaller tables is a 2x AC outlet on the wall. At the counter behind the barista there are three 2x AC outlets (see below).

And if that’s not enough, the big communal table has two 2x outlets built into each table lamp (see below).

There’s a restroom too, for customers only.

Overall your phone and your body will find a great place to rest and recharge.

Happy Charging!

Goddbye #lowbattery. Hello #OpenOutlet.
